iXL is a global
internet company. The New York office initially moved into a rather
anonymous existing space, but soon concluded that the reception
and conference suite need to be re-designed in order to create
an image more appropriate for the company.
Planes of
switchable glass, translucent colored glass and perforated aluminum,
together with virtual planes of light, were layered to define
the boundary between the reception area and the conference suite
beyond. The variable degrees of translucency and overlapping of
the planes allow for modulation of transparency and privacy, and
thus of the boundary itself. The layering of materials and light
reflections create a "deep space" of images which also serves
as a metaphor for the space of the Internet which is the medium
of iXL's work.
The main conference
room, equipped with an interactive table, has a projection screen
surrounded by a halo of light. When it is not being actively used,
the screen is programmed to change colors at slow intervals, creating
different moods in the space.
