Sony Design Center America Sony Design Center is a studio for the Sony Electronics industrial and graphic design groups located on the East Coast of the USA. A sense of collective space was achieved by removing all existing partitions and ceilings, thereby creating a large, sweeping volume which is occupied by the design studio. Another concept, that of flexibility and movement in both physical and psychological senses, was developed by using fragments of curvilinear geometries, which also serve to organize the important public functions. For the most part, private offices were eliminated, and non-territorial areas were established to promote free interaction between the designers. A large conference room is bounded by an operable translucent wall which can be opened up to accommodate semi-annual company-wide product presentations. The entry area is furnished with a mobile screen whose primary function is to shield vendors' proprietary products from outsiders; it can also be disassembled and re-configured for other purposes. A library and strategy room, both intended for more informal meetings, are carved out of the middle of the studio along a cross-axis marked by an articulated column. The studio space is defined and modulated by the building's structural steel grid, ductwork and lighting fixtures. Translucent acrylic and perforated steel are used to create a sense of transparency, while wood surfaces are introduced to envelop special gathering places.
