This
loft is in a typical 19th Century brick and wood manufacturing building in Soho,
configured as a long rectangle with windows on each end. The project is to create
a living and working environment for a small family, one member of which is an
active artist. The space is completely reconfigured into a series of large and
small interlocking volumes, creating functionality and a rich special experience.
New sources of natural light are introduced from above, providing daylight into
the center of the plan. The entire loft will serve as a gallery for the client's
extensive collection of contemporary art.
The
spaces are arranged on three levels: living, eating and sleeping spaces are on
the lowest level, an artistÕs studio on the mezzanine and outdoor living space
on the roof. A new open riser stair with glass railings and skylight is inserted
to link the spaces together in one vertical axis. Three existing indentations
adjacent to the stair are illuminated to create a waterfall of light that spills
out into the center of the plan. A large skylight is placed in the center of the
artist studio. A dumbwaiter provides direct connection between the kitchen and
roof terrace.
The spaces
is conceived as a white on white palate with natural finished maple floors
