This loft
is located on the roof of a former schoolhouse in the West Village
in Manhattan. In the 1980's the building was converted to residential
use and rather awkwardly planned penthouses were added.
The loft
has been reconfigured to create a more natural relationship between
the living areas and a clear relationship between interior and
the outdoor terrace. Mobile "screens" were used to allow
the open space to accommodate different privacy needs.
The kitchen
has been expanded and reoriented to take advantage of the existing
natural light. A curtain in the dining area allows a portion of
the space to be converted to a guest sleeping area when necessary.
The existing small opening from the living room to the terrace
has been enlarged and centered on the space in order to create
continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. This relationship
has been further reinforced by use natural materials throughout.
