Floating Cinema is
a radical juxtaposition of two ideas: a cinema and an open air
boat, a moving theater on water. Cinema is normally an interiorized
experience; here, the "journey" becomes real as well as metaphorical.
Placed against the skyline of the city, the purity of the cinematic
experience is altered by displacement as it exploits fantastic
and surrealist notions which lie below the surface of both the
cinema and the city.
The idea is simple:
to erect a screen, seating and a bar on an existing platform of
the barge, then add propulsion, and launch into the nighttime
waters off the coast of New York. It is at once a pleasure boat
and a sci-fi vessel, experienced as a dream.
