Crosby Street

RoofscapeThis Soho loft building was converted to residential use without much thought being given to how the roof space would be used. Rather than sectioning off parcels of roof to each tenant, we proposed a site-specific "zoning" diagram that identified developable and non-developable areas. As a consequence, common space for the lower floor residents was provided while at the same time access to views and direct sunlight was insured for everyone. Although the building's area could not be increased, additional height for the upper floors could be achieved by displacing space, which had the added benefit of drawing light and exterior courts down into the upper levels of the building. A certain freedom of design was therefore allowed for, and it was envisioned that eventually, the building would grow it's own small roofscape of miniature towers.
