Altitunes is a company
that has retail outlets in airports around the country where music
and portable entertainment devices are sold. The project, for
their headquarters in New York, was designed to create a congenial
working environment with open office areas, private offices and
time-shared hubs for salespeople. The space, which offered a substantial
amount of natural light, is in an early 20th century office building
appropriately located on Tin Pan Alley. Two important criteria
were a low budget and quick realization: the project was designed
and built in 2 months.
The Altitunes identity
was reinforced through the use of light and color. Rigid translucent
acrylic panels, homasote and paint were used as the primary materials.
The acrylic panels provide privacy while transmitting light and
maintaining an atmosphere of openness in a relatively small space.
Flexibility was derived from a careful analysis of actual and
anticipated working procedures, which yielded a number of non-territorial
areas for individuals and small groups to gather.
